"Founded in 1983 by Dan Gelbart and Ken Spencer, Burnaby,BC-based Creo was initially a manufacturer of optical tape recorder (OTR) devices and a vendor of laser imaging engines to the printing industry. In the early 1990s, management decided to service the industry directly as a full-system CTP provider. Rather than offer a piece of a solution, the Creo team decided to build a complete CTP production system. The goal? Make it easy for customers to adopt new technology by eliminating each potential roadblock, one by one. To do this, the team leveraged their optical data storage technology as the platform upon which to build some of the worlds leading CTP systems.

From 1991 to 1995, most research and development initiatives at Creo focused on building a viable thermal imaging engine for CTP applications. In 1994, the team delivered their first commercial CTP system, which used visible light to create the image on the plate. Creo attended the Drupa 95 tradeshow with fully functional visible-light CTP systems and a substantial installed base to their credit. The team also introduced the first thermal CTP system at the show."
